We have been asking Canadian runners to think back to their first race and share their story with us. This week, Matt Robertson told us about when he first started training while living in Australia. Back then, he was managing just three kilometres when he headed out the door. Now, he has done marathons and triathlons. Name: Matt Robertson Age then: 23 Age now: 27 Town: Waterdown, Ont. Race: Point Cartwright 10K; Mooloolaba, Australia What inspired me to run: I wanted to get into shape. I was living in Australia at the time and healthy living and running was a big part of the culture there. It inspired me to try. How I trained: I started off by just getting out the door and running. When I started, I was barely able to run three kilometres in under 30 minutes. I slowly moved up to be able to run 5K, then 8K and, finally, 10K. From there, it just became a habit and part of my routine to run. Since then I have gotten much more strict with my training plan but, at the same time, I still follow the same principle of just getting out the door. Races I’ve done since: I’ve done six 5K and 10K races, five half-marathons, one full marathon, two Tough Mudders and I’ve been to Around the Bay twice. I also got into triathlons. I’ve done six altogether in everything from sprint to the half Ironman distances.
